San Diego County Horse Communit Needs Your Help

The San Diego County Horse Community Needs Your Help!

We're looking for people to help us research major use permit information for the 58 counties in California. We need the details of what is required in each county for:

1. Public boarding stables - is a Major Use Permit required to board one horse like in San Diego County? If so, what are the costs and how much time does it take? Are road improvements required?

2. Simply boarding a few horses for friends on one's AG zoned land.

Please contact Sally Cob if you're able to help obtain this information.
For those who would like more information and for anyone who would like to contribute their opinion regarding what the new zoning ordinance should include visit EquineZoning or e-mail Equine Zoning

Medieval Times

These knights didn't have much time to learn how to ride, (and I'm not sure if long hair and good looks was a prerequisite), but they really handle themselves very well on horse back, and they knew how to take a fall. Which makes me think, maybe all us equestrians could benefit from practicing how to fall off a horse. We often spend so much time trying not to fall off that when the inevitable happens, we're ill prepared to sort of "roll with the punches". Just a thought.

This Medieval Times is located in Buena Park, CA. We were here to celebrate Jessika's 19th birthday, and watch some great horseback riding.
Watch video all the way through; there are some great interviews with the knights! at the end!

Pulsating Electromagnetic Therapy for Horses

Tango gets good vibrations from the Medicine Hat Animal Chiropractic, Dr. Dawn Fletcher of Professional Horse Services of Southern California.

Last week, during a chiropractic adjustment with Dr. Fletcher, it was discovered he had developed bone spurs along his lumbar region of the spine - certainly this could explain his often cranky moods under saddle! Bone spurs are symptoms of old injuries, and this one on his spine was probably initiated 3 years ago. So when the good doctor arrived today to adjust Jack, she treated Tango to a pulsating electromagnetic therapy. From the looks of it, he really enjoyed his day at the spa!!!

The therapy blanket and neck wrap are from Respond Systems, Inc.

In addition to pressure point therapy we give him after each ride, Tango will be wearing a new saddle pad from CSI

One in a Million

About two years ago I attended the Certified Horsemanship Association's International Conference held at the Horse Park in Kentucky; my main objective, besides my never ending quest for more information on everything about horses, was to fulfill my requirement to maintain my certification with the organization.
One of the few riding opportunities being offered was a semi-private dressage clinic with Jo-Anne Young, Professor of Equine Studies at Houghton College, NY. First come, first served - only two spots available. Got up early the first morning to sign up for one of the openings...and I just made it! The second spot was mine!! When I arrived at the arena, the first rider was already there; a petite older woman with the most curious riding helmet that had a straw hat rim taped around it to protect her face from the sun.

After an enjoyable riding lesson, we went to several of the other seminars and clinics together, and our conversation deepened. She told me about her horse who had just passed a world record in endurance riding, but she hadn't seen any publications on the event yet. That evening, Mary Anna Wood and I spent several hours in my room perusing the Internet on my MacBook for all the news releases and publications notices about her very special horse, Elmer Bandit. She told me all about how they rode, how fast he trotted, his diet and his life in the pastures at home. And as she talked, I was amazed and inspired by this woman and her old Arab gelding and all that they had accomplished together. I decided right then and there that, while I wouldn't break any records, there was no reason why I shouldn't take up something I had been dreaming about for a long time - endurance riding. The next day, at one of the seminars, this gentle horsewoman, who had rode over 20,000 miles on her grey Arab, gave me a knitted pot holder - she was always knitting them, keeps her hands busy, she says. It was purple and pink.
When I got back to San Diego I began my search for an endurance prospect. I finally got my Harley SF - a 3 year old chestnut purebred Arab gelding. We have a long way to go. But I have been inspired by a one in a million pair!

And every time I think, "oh, my 30 year old horse is too old to do that," or when my old horse seems to be faltering, I'm not so quick to think, "maybe it's better if I just have him put down" because I think of Elmer Bandit, and all he accomplished at the age of 37. He has really given me a new perspective on horses and what they can do; he has literally kept my old horse alive with his spirit!

Elmer Bandit passed over the rainbow bridge this week, and with him, the admiration of many horse people. I know my friend, Mary Anna Wood must be feeling a deep loss, a void in her life that can never be filled. I feel so sad for her.
Today, I found the purple and pink pot holder she knitted for me. I put it in my saddle bag, and from now until forever, I will rack up the trail miles with it tucked behind my cantle, in loving memory of the horse who inspired me.

Equine Affaire - Pomona, CA

Horse people of southern California must not miss the annual Equine Affaire in Pomona (sort of near L.A.); not only is this a great opportunity to pick-up barn supplies at rock bottom prices, there are also clinics on everything from applied kinesiology to hobbling. You're sure to come away with at least one new, useful tidbit of information as well as a must have newfangled barn gadget. Here's a peak at how Saturday went...

Clinicians this year included Craig Cameron and Stacy Westfall. Missing this year was one of my favorites and fellow CHA member, Julie Goodnight.

Appearing for the first time, a newly formed consortium of professional horsewomen from the San Diego area, the Professional Horse Service of Southern California was there. A great group of horsewomen, with our own Dawn Fletcher (chiropractic) and Christine Griffin & Lisa Grim (Dental) who work on the horses here at Kids Horsin' Around!

So what did I get? I went with specifics in mind:
1. To get great footage for this video blog.
2. Stuff for competitive/endurance trail riding. The last time I rode, my butt hurt and it was only 10 miles - so I was in the market for a sheepie to cover my saddle. I got a nice black one. Then, I got a saddle bag for the cantle; and a cell phone strap-around-the-leg holder.

Next time - bring a rolling, folding shopping cart!!
